Epilogue: "The Hobbit was published in 1937 and launched Tolkien's career as one of the most acclaimed fantasy writers in the world. Robert Quilter Gilson and Geoffrey Bache Smith died in 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. Geoffrey's mother published his poetry in a collection called 'A Spring Harvest'--with Tolkien's foreword. Christopher Wiseman composed very little music after the war. He lived until 1987. Although their friendship was never the same, John Ronald named his third child 'Christopher'. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien died in 1973, two years after Edith. They were survived by their four children. On their shared headstone are written elvish names from Tolkien's mythology about a mortal man who fell in love with an elven princess."
