When Bill Podmore introduced the Websters in 1984, he intended them as a long-term family, so was infuriated by Peter Armitage's decision to quit the role of Bill Webster after less than a year. However, the character of Bill's son Kevin was 'saved' by having him stay in the street as Emily Bishop's lodger and has remained in the show ever since, having three wives and four children - meaning the Websters have indeed become a long-term family, although in a different way than envisaged. Bill Webster returned to the show for two further stints as a regular character, with his daughter Debbie returning in 2020 after an absence of 35 years.
