Despite a good deal being made about Santa's beard being real in the movie, the beard was actually false. In her autobiography, Natalie Wood explained that Il miracolo della 34ª strada (1947) always arrived for hair and makeup before the rest of the cast because of how long it took to apply the beard, so she'd never seen him without it until the wrap party and didn't recognize him.
