The director, Chatrichalerm Yukol, reveals (in his DVD commentary) that the young ("five or six") actor playing the boy king, (Prince) Ratha, when to be executed in the film's story, got to believe he really was to be so (!) - to even have asked the actor playing the executioner to try not to hurt him when he did it.
