The first attempt at any type of sequel from the 1939 film was a 1961 syndicated animated tv program produced by Rankin and Bass called "Tales of the Wizard of Oz". The show featured the Scarecrow, now curiously named "Socrates"; the Cowardly Lion, now curiously named "Dandelion"; and the Tin Man, now curiously named "Rusty"; interacting with the eponymous Wizard of Oz; sans Dorothy. Eventually this series produced it's own tv movie; an animated sequel to the Wizard of Oz called "Return to Oz", in 1964. It's an hour long special and it sees Dorothy finding her magic slippers again; (silver now, as they were in the original Frank Baum novel); flying back to Oz, and saving her friends again from the evil clutches of the Wicked Witch of the West, who has been resurrected by a magic winter storm. The animated shorts and the tv movie can all be viewed online on YouTube.
