The scene where Jeffrey Hunter lands on Omaha Beach pulling a life raft as a shell goes off, then falls to one knee to call for a medic for an injured soldier, was recreated from actual newsreel footage from D- Day. The soldier in the newsreel who Hunter plays, is Leo Dare, an Army engineer, whose son is actor/screenwriter Beau Dare, who years later worked in Hollywood with Robert Mitchum, whose character in this film, Gen. Norman Cota, meets Hunter a few moments later, and has him blow up a concrete barrier to help his company escape off the beach.
