The concept of Sam inhabiting the identity of another person, to incorporate change for the better, was inspired partly by Il paradiso può attendere (1978), which, in itself, was a remake of L'inafferrabile signor Jordan (1941), with the one exception of changing the lead character from a prize fighter (in Mr. Jordan) to a Los Angeles Rams quarterback (in Heaven). Series creator Donald P. Bellisario saw the concept as a way of developing an original anthology series, as anthologies were unpopular with the networks.
