Considering this was the first Star Trek film to use the maroon jacket and turtleneck uniform (which became the standard through the original series films), it would have been apparent to no one who saw this film upon its release, that Saavik was anything but a full Captain. The color-coded turtlenecks had never appeared on-screen before.
