The captures of Ash's Squirtle, Taillow and Muk are similar in that all three were once leaders of a group of Pokémon that caused trouble before being captured by Ash. However, unlike Squirtle and Taillow, which led groups of its own species, the group Muk led was comprised of its previous evolution.
