Fans of both the Lord of the Rings novels and the movies know what happens to Balin. He attempts to essentially finish Thror's attempt to reclaim the ancient kingdom of Moria from the Orcs, more than likely emboldened with the victory over the Orcs at Erebor in this film, and is killed and entombed in the city regions of the Mines of Moria.
