When Roger tells Philip that he would send Bernard Baruch out to "pay off the girl," he is referring to Bernard Mannes "Barney" Baruch (1870-1965), a noted American financier and philanthropist, and economic advisor to Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was well known to New Yorkers as he took walks in Lafayette and Central Parks, often sitting on park benches talking to ordinary people. So, audiences (in New York City, at least) would have had a fair chance of recognizing this reference by Roger.
