George R.R. Martin based the "Dance of the Dragons", the civil war between the factions of Aegon II and Rhaenyra, on the English civil war known as "The Anarchy" following the death of King Henry I in 1135, who had named his daughter and only living legitimate child, Matilda, as his heir to become England's first queen regnant. The throne of England was usurped by Matilda's cousin Stephen of Blois, whose claim was backed by reports the king had changed his mind on his deathbed and named Stephen heir. Il trono di spade (2011) was also loosely based on an English civil war for the throne, the fifteenth century "Wars of the Roses".
