The final episode was intended as a cliffhanger because at the time it was filmed, NBC was still deciding whether or not to cancel the show. The cliffhanger format was intended to help persuade NBC to give the show one more chance, if only to resolve the "To Be Continued" ending. Il mio amico Alf (1996), six years later, finally brought closure. Due to poor writing and the absence of the original human cast, many fans reject the movie as part of the show's canon.
