While reading the comic books in preparation to direct the film, David Ayer had Margot Robbie in mind for the role of Harley Quinn. However, Emma Roberts was offered the role by Warner Bros., but she turned it down to star in Scream Queens (2015). Olivia Thirlby, Imogen Poots, Alison Brie, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, Amber Heard, Emma Watson, Emily Browning, Skyler Shaye, Peyton List, Zooey Deschanel, Nicole Gale Anderson, Lily Collins, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Sara Paxton, Nathalia Ramos, Amanda Seyfried, and Evan Rachel Wood were also considered for the role of Harley Quinn.
