Carl Gottlieb had been approached in the early discussions to write the script, but turned the offer down because of the money being offered. After director John D. Hancock was fired, the decision was made to completely revamp the script. With Universal Pictures in a bind, Gottlieb agreed to rewrite the script for more money than they originally offered him.
