In the penultimate scene, Bruce Dern starts molesting young Marnie in a flashback, and when he strikes her mother who's trying to help her, Marnie murders him with an andiron poker from the fireplace. This is one of the first movies that showed a child-molesting incident like this, and it broke new ground for movies going forward.
