Val says to Earl about the graboids "for all you know they can fly." Near the end when the graboid Stumpy falls to its death, Val says "can you fly, sucker?" In the third film it turns out the third part of the graboid life cycle, dubbed the Ass-Blaster, has the ability to fly.
