On 8th May 2022, Ncuti Gatwa was announced to play the 14th Doctor. This makes him the first African actor to play the lead role in the show's history, and the fourth Scottish actor to do so after Sylvester McCoy, David Tennant and Peter Capaldi. Showrunner Russell T. Davies confirmed that the secret was kept for three months. During that time, misleading stories and false rumours were deliberately planted during that time, and he was happy that some of them worked.
