By the late 2010s, the film was still in pre-production, and a casting call for the main role was being conducted. Austin Butler was interested in auditioning for the film. But, he became extremely reluctant. Prior, while driving with his then-girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens in early 2019, the song "Blue Christmas" by Elvis Presley was playing on the radio, and Butler sang along. Hudgens urged him to audition. Afterward, Butler's agent called and informed him of the casting call, and he finally decided to audition.
