Paul Thomas Anderson said that he had been directing Cooper Hoffman his entire life, in home movies with Anderson's children. According to Hoffman's grandmother Marilyn O'Connor, Anderson and Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cooper's father, "were probably the very very best friends. They did everything together."
