Flash Gordon, Star Wars and Star Trek are all winked at in the opening credits. The linear narrative first appeared in the Flash Gordon shorts, way back in the 1930's, followed by the Star Wars trilogy, while the sound effects were similar to those heard in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987).
