The execution of Reynald de Chatillon in the film largely follows the words of a witness of the event, Imad ad-Din, and by historian Ibn al-Athir. According to them, Saladin offered ice water to Guy who drank before handing the cup to Reynald. Saladin then rebuked Reynald for not only taking the cup without permission but also accusing him of many crimes. Then Saladin gave Reynald a choice, convert to Islam or be executed. Of course, Reynald refused to convert and Saladin killed him with a sword in front of Guy who was shocked by this. Then Saladin beheaded Reynald. Even Saladin's admonishment to Guy in the film somewhat follows the historical text, ""A king does not kill a king, but that man's perfidy and insolence went too far."
