The film's director Charles B. Griffith came up with the title of his earlier similarly titled movie Eat My Dust (1976) film when the crew were shooting the car chase at the sand dunes. The crew got covered with sand and dirt so much that Griffith turned to Roger Corman and said, "We ought to call this picture 'Eat My Dust'.'' At the time, the film's working title was 'The Car', but it was changed to 'Eat My Dust' to avoid confusion with another movie that was being filmed at the same time which had the same name [See: La macchina nera (1977)].
