(at around 2h 30 mins) In the original graphic novel's final section, after the Squid attack on Times Square, it is revealed that Robert Redford is considering running for the Office of the President in the next election. In the film, however, it is revealed to be Ronald Reagan (who actually was an actor and successfully ran for President) is running for President. This might be a nod at Frank Miller's 'The Dark Knight Returns', another famously dark graphic novel published by DC Comics where Ronald Reagan is the President of the United States and the Justice League were forcibly retired and forgotten by the general public, save for Superman, who is essentially a government agent and serves the same purpose as Doctor Manhattan as a nuclear deterrent against the Soviets.
