When still expected to direct, Tim Burton announced this would be his last 'Batman' movie. Capping off the trilogy, he'd intended to emphasize themes of fear, redemption and the continuation of life after tragedy. These were borrowed by Joel Schumacher after his replacement as director, although the theme of fear was omitted, as he did not plan on translating 'The Scarecrow' into his film, Burton's original idea. The title of the film was similarly changed from 'Batman Continues' (in line with Burton's aforementioned theme of continuation after hardship) with 'Batman Forever' (a title Schumacher thought encapsulated everything into one). It's been said that Brad Dourif was considered for Scarecrow but Dourif himself denied he was ever considered for Scarecrow but mentioned Burton saw him on a plane and wanted to played as The Joker back in Batman (1989). There were no plans to use Scarecrow whatever as many fans believe.
