Before the series entered development, there was a rumor that a big screen adaptation was in the works with John Travolta and Ben Stiler being considered for the role of J.R Ewing and Jennifer Lopez and Jessica Simpson being considered for the role of Sue Ellen. Bill Paxton was considered to play Cliff Barnes, while Owen Wilson was in the running for the role of Bobby Ewing. Betty Thomas and Gurinda Chadha were both named as potential directors. The film version was being touted as a spoof version of the show but never went into production.
