The filmmakers wanted to send John Wick to Morocco as an homage to the famous Humphrey Bogart noir, "Casablanca." Rick's Place from "Casablanca" inspired the idea for The Continental. Director Chad Stahelski says, "That's where we first got the idea that all assassins would go to one place all over the world, their only refuge from the dangers of the street."
