Ian McKellen and Sylvester McCoy previously appeared together in King Lear (2008). The role of Lear had been previously played by Sir Michael Hordern, who also played Gandalf in the BBC Radio production of The Lord of the Rings. McCoy's role of The Fool was previously played by John Hurt, who not only shared the role of The Doctor (AKA Doctor Who) with McCoy, but also played Aragorn in Il signore degli anelli (1978). In the BBC Radio production of The Lord of the Rings, Radagast was voiced by Donald Gee, who played a different role on Doctor Who (1963).
