The title phrase ''I Never Promised You a Rose Garden'' from this film and its source novel has gone into the popular lexicon of famous sayings. According to the 'Quote / Counterquote' website, the film's source ''...novel is the apparent source of the saying, though it was made even more famous by country music singer Lynn Anderson's 1970 hit song of the same name. The well-known opening lyrics of the song, written by singer/songwriter Joe South, are: 'I beg your pardon, I never promised you a rose garden'.''
