The movie is part of the horror sub-genre known as "splatter film," a term coined by George A. Romero to describe Zombi (1978). However, critic David Edelstein labeled this film "torture porn" thus coining the term used for splatter films in the 21st century. "Torture porn" was then retroactively applied to earlier films like Saw - L'enigmista (2004).
