Broadway actor Mandy Patinkin auditioned for the role of Quasimodo, but his audition was a disaster. To this day, it is known at Disney as the "Patinkin Incident." According to directors Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, Patinkin brought along his own arranger, to do a new arrangement of the song, "Out There." This greatly angered composers Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, who walked out of the audition. Patinkin's style of portraying Quasimodo also collided with the producers' demands, and he later stated "'I [was] just there at the audition [and I] said, 'I can't do this.'" He would go on to play Quasimodo in the TV movie, The Hunchback (1997) the following year.
