Geoffrey Owens was often mistaken for Phillip Michael Thomas. Owens auditioned for the role of Tubbs on Miami Vice but was turned down because he was considered too young to be a veteran streetwise cop. A year later, Owens landed the role of Elvin Tibideaux.
