The comic Batman: Year Three, as well as this movie, make a big deal of revenge as a central theme. Batman's desire to avenge the death of Jason Todd (the second Robin) has parallels with Dick Grayson's desire to avenge the death of his parents. The comic also draws parallels between what happened to Batman's parents and the similar fate met by Dick's family. Bruce is able to relate to his ward's quest for vengeance in both the comic and the movie.
