King Ghidorah was the antagonist in an early draft of the script, having crashed in the Arctic during the last Ice Age and being kept frozen in the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Depository (a cover by MONARCH), before escaping and fighting Godzilla in San Francisco. He was removed by Gareth Edwards, who felt that Ghidorah (being extraterrestrial) did not fit the film's "wrath of nature" theme, and to avoid similarities with the popular alien film Transformers (2007). Ghidorah did, however, appear in the sequel.
