The first three series were made by British tv broadcaster Anglia Television and broadcast on the itv network. The show sold well and was popular in the US so when Anglia wanted to drop the show, as they thought it was running out of steam, an American network picked up the concept and started making shows under the same title. These are generally considered the poorer stories but nonetheless Anglia still bought them and showed them in the UK.
