After the real Kevin Weeks saw the film, he called it a "work of fiction". He said Johnny Depp's portrayal of James "Whitey" Bulger, Rory Cochrane's portrayal of of Stephen Flemmi, and the portrayal of himself by Jesse Plemons were "way off". He also said the film showed him participating in crimes, in which he vehemently denies being involved.
