Part of Ron Howard's desire to make this film was due to it being distributed by Touchstone Pictures, a brand of Disney whose very first film was Howard's Splash (1984). Touchstone was created for Disney to distribute Splash and other films with content too mature for the ordinary Disney label. Producer Brian Grazer said in a featurette on the DVD of Splash that he and Howard were constantly asked by Disney to make another movie for the Touchstone label but after the success of Splash most of Howard's films were distributed by Universal Pictures. When this film was offered he immediately accepted in order to work for Disney again. He would subsequently direct another movie for Disney 22 years later with the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018).
