An official report compiled by the Arizona State Forestry Division determined that although the fire shelters utilized by the Granite Mountain Hotshots performed as designed, the ferocious heat and flames of the Yarnell Hill fire, driven by heavy winds and concentrated by the walls of the box canyon in which the Hotshots found themselves entrapped, created conditions that were simply unsurvivable. Inspection of fire shelters recovered from the deployment site revealed that the intense heat had been sufficient to degrade the quartz and fiberglass construction materials of the shelters- indicating the radiant heat of the burnover area likely exceeded 2,000F/1,000C, beyond the design capability of the fire shelter, and far beyond the 300F limit of human survivability.
