At the turn of the twentieth century, and even earlier, skin complexion was an indicator of class distinction. The European expatriates who were paler, were part of the upper crust, and spent most of their time indoors. While those who were darker, spent more time outside, engaging in manual labor, a more lower class occupation. The twenty-first century, was a reversal in trends. Those with a sun-kissed appearance have more disposable income to engage in outdoor leisure activities, while those who can not are engaged in office-related occupations.
