In various interviews, Taylor Sheridan stated he left on bad terms from the show Sons of Anarchy (2008) (drama about the biker subculture) due to a contract dispute. As a result, his character was summarily and unceremoniously killed off the show. The episode, Yellowstone: Going Back to Cali (2020) may have been a form of vindication or a way to exorcise certain demons from his time on the series. On another level, the confrontation between John Dutton and the bikers is a metaphor, where John Dutton represents Taylor Sheridan or the "native sons" of Montana (or even the American West or the Heartland in general), and the Motorcycle Club represents the "Sons of Anarchy" or California, or other out-of-towner, transplants. In fact, it was this pivotal experience, that inspired him to go to a writing career, so that he can forge his own path in Hollywood.
