In order to provide funding for the series, the producers sold the right of their series to any company that was willing to gamble on their series (a common practice even now). Bandai purchased the license to make Yamato model kits; Nippon Columbia purchased the license to sell Yamato music; and most importantly, three major publishers (Akita Shoten, Tokuma Shoten and Asahi Sonorama) signed on for the manga rights - all three got practically identically rights (even for that time, and would never be tolerated these days).
