Jackson's suicide was originally going to be by swimming out into the ocean to drown. That was the analogous character's death in È nata una stella (1937) and È nata una stella (1954), and it is foreshadowed here both by his interest in swimming while in rehab and the lyrics of the song "Shallow." Bradley Cooper claimed he even scouted the beach where the scene would be filmed. However, just before they were to go to location Cooper had a vision of Jackson's suicide in the garage and decided to film that version instead.
