Worf and Jadzia Dax were the first pair of regular Star Trek characters to be married to each other. The episode Star Trek: Balance of Terror (1966) had a marriage ceremony between two guest characters that was prematurely canceled and never finished due to the death of the man in the same episode, so the makers of DS9 wanted to have a formal union that would last for a while. Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres eventually got married on Star Trek: Voyager (1995), and Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) alumni Riker and Troi were married in Star Trek - La nemesi (2002). O'Brien was only a recurring character at the time of his marriage on Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) season four, episode eleven, "Data's Day", and his wife Keiko was not a regular character on either Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) or this show.
