Director Stuart Baird was reportedly oblivious to the universe of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), to the point that he thought Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) was an alien instead of a human with cybernetic eyes. Screenwriter John Logan, on the other hand, was a long-time fan of Star Trek who relished the opportunity to contribute to the franchise.
