Writer/director Dean Devlin is well known for collaborating with director Roland Emmerich. Emmerich previously wrote and directed a similar global warming disaster film , The Day After Tomorrow - L'alba del giorno dopo (2004), that also features a scene of Tokyo experiencing a devastating extreme hailstorm. However, the hailstones in "Geostorm" are much larger than in the latter film, being big enough to tear a bus in half. Tsunamis, tornadoes, and aircraft accidents are also disasters featured in both films.
