Paul Thomas Anderson had previously attempted to adapt the novels Vineland and Mason & Dixon, both by Thomas Pynchon, but eventually decided that each book was simply impossible to adequately adapt into a feature film. About a month before the novel Inherent Vice was released, Anderson and producer JoAnne Sellar heard through the grapevine that Pynchon was open to selling the film rights, and they immediately leapt at the chance because, as Anderson said, "as a fan, if someone is going to fuck it up, I want to be the one who fucks it up."
