When Dame Eileen Atkins won a BAFTA in 2008 for her portrayal of Miss Deborah Jenkyns on this show, she jokingly said in her acceptance speech that she would come back to haunt the cast and crew if a second season was made, because they had killed off her character early in the first season (Cranford: August 1842 (2007)). During filming of the second season, Dame Judi Dench, who played Deborah's sister Miss Matty Jenkyns, arranged for a life-size cut-out photo of Deborah to appear on the railway platform where a scene was being shot, and it became a tradition after that to take photos of the cast with this cut-out of Deborah wherever filming was taking place.
