James Cameron claimed that he cast Sam Worthington as Jake Sully over other actors who auditioned for the role on the strength of his delivery of the "This is our land!" speech. His only reservation was that Worthington spoke in a thick Australian accent, and was inexperienced playing an American character. Cameron took the chance that Worthington would be able to trained by the dialect coach to speak in a colloquial American accent in time for filming.
