As portrayed in the program, King Alfred suffered with debilitating diseases throughout his life. It is not possible to be 100% sure (read: the 'Dark Ages') of what ailed the Saxon King, or even the true nature of his symptoms. However both Bishop Asser and Bald compiled books detailing Alfreds afflictions during his life. Using these limited historical sources (or indeed much later sources made of these original sources) G. Craig hypothesises in his book 'Alfred the Great: A Diagnosis' that these ailings, diarrhea, constipation, (unknown) internal pain, spleen/liver/stomach/bowel, are symptomatic of Crohn's disease.
