The opening scene where Gandalf meets Thórin in the Prancing Pony and puts him on his quest to retake the Lonely Mountain is not in the novel "The Hobbit". It was first mentioned in the appendices to The Lord of the Rings novels, and later retold in chapter "The Quest of Erebor" from J.R.R. Tolkien's book "Unfinished Tales".
